January 13th, 2018|Categories: Google News|

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A diver died after going into cardiac arrest Friday morning off the Hillsboro Inlet in Pompano Beach, authorities said.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue spokeswoman Sandra King said the diver, identified as Charles Adams, 68, of Fort Worth, Texas, was in the water and went into cardiac arrest as he surfaced.

Adams was pulled onto a dive boat, where he was given CPR until a Fort Lauderdale fireboat arrived.

Authorities then transferred the diver to Broward Health North, where he died.

Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Joy Oglesby said Adams was diving in about 60 feet of water when he surfaced near the boat and then fell into unconsciousness.

A death investigation into the incident remains open.

Brightline service from Fort Lauderdale to West Palm Beach begins Jan. 13

January 13th, 2018|Categories: Google News|

When the first paying customers of South Florida’s new express commuter rail service board Saturday, they’ll find sumptuous leather seats fitted with power outlets, free Wifi fast enough for a Netflix stream, iced Starbucks ($4) — and bathrooms you can operate with the waive of your hand.

Government officials and media got a preview Friday as Brightline, the privately funded train line, finally made its first public run between downtown Fort Lauderdale and downtown West Palm Beach on a nonstop ride that took 33 minutes.

When regular service begins Saturday, South Floridians will hop aboard for $10 or $15 a pop. But those bargain fares may not last.

An executive for Brightline said during the tour that prices for the railway will be “dynamic” and subject to change on a “moment to moment” basis. Unlimited, monthly, weekly and weekend passes will also be offered, he said.

Initially, Brightline will offer 10 daily roundtrips on weekdays and nine on weekends, with service beginning as early as 6 a.m. and ending as late as 11 p.m. Pets and bicycles will be allowed.

Introductory rates will remain in place for at least the next six to eight weeks, giving the company time to evaluate travel patterns before determining regular prices. The fare change will coincide with the opening of the Miami Central station in downtown and the intiation of service between downtown Miami and downtown Fort Lauderdale.

“So ultimately it’ll be dynamically priced,” said Mike Reininger, the executive director of Brightline parent company Florida East Coast Industries and the former Brightline president. “It’ll be priced according to what the demand is across the time of the day or the time of the year. It can change moment to moment.”

About 100 invited guests gathered Friday inside the Fort Lauderdale Brightline station, a sleek two-story lounge equipped with touch-screen ticket kiosks, a VIP area and a small children’s play area.

Company executives and elected officials gushed over the prospects of connecting South Florida’s downtown areas with the new fleet of non-stop express trains, which can seat about 240 passengers in its current configuration but can be expanded to seat almost 600 per train.

“This is phenomenal, and I’m just waiting until we can link our portion to it. We’re almost there but we still have a way to go,” said U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Florida. “I think that it will help the traffic situation … It will streamline travel distances and a lot of gridlock.”

Brightline covers a route similar to the cheaper but slower TriRail system, which makes multiple stops in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties — but not in city-center downtowns. The new Brightline system was hailed by most presenters as not just a transportation project, but a “transformation project.”

Carbon dioxide cannons erupted in the crowd, and biodegradable confetti littered the air as the a four-car train prepared for its initial journey.

Reaching speeds of 79 mph, the diesel-electric train sounded its horn at every intersection as it zoomed north across county lines. Brightline will soon implement a “quiet zone” from downtown Miami to West Palm Beach – a stretch of over 70 miles – in which train engineers will not be required to sound their horns at intersections, sparing homeowners along the train tracks headaches, Reininger said.

“I’m just really excited, very enthusiastic about how this is gonna transform South Florida,” said Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler, who rode on the train for the first time Friday.

Seiler said he’d happily pay higher rates to ride again.

“To me, whether the rates are $10, $15, $20, it may be a little higher than that, but to me it’s all about the convenience, the comfort and the efficiency,” he said. “I could see myself doing this on a regular basis.”

Detractors have voiced concerns about Brightline’s financial viability, which depends in part on tax-exempt bonds, and its safety in light of recent Amtrak derailments.

Service between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach originally was slated for launch last summer, with service linking downtown Miami and Fort Lauderdale scheduled a few months later. The launch date for that leg has yet to be announced. Construction on the leg linking West Palm Beach to Orlando is expected to begin this year.

Brightline service between downtown Fort Lauderdale, NW Second Avenue, and downtown West Palm Beach, 501 Evernia Street, begins January 13. Introductory fares start at $10.

Initially, Brightline will offer 10 daily roundtrips on weekdays and nine on weekends, with service beginning as early as 6 a.m. and ending as late as 11 p.m. Pets and bicycles will be allowed.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at Revolution Live Fort Lauderdale January 24

January 12th, 2018|Categories: Google News|

For those who have been waiting patiently for new Black Rebel Motorcycle Club music, Christmas came late when the band finally released Wrong Creatures in January after a five-year album hiatus. “We tried to do the album in two pieces, focusing on six songs at a time rather than doing all 12 songs at once. That ended up being the worst idea of all time,” bassist/singer Robert Levon Been tells New Times. He describes the recording process as excruciating pain akin to dental work.

“I didn’t realize what a violent gear shift it was from writing and rehearsing to mixing songs. Mixing is very obsessive-compulsive. You’re holding everything under a magnifying glass. It’s the opposite of daydreaming and imagining and letting a song out. So once we finished doing that for six songs, instead of getting on the road and falling in love with the songs and each other again, we had to get back in the studio for six more songs while we still hated each other.”

If you listen to the new record without empathy, you will find Been’s torture worthwhile. The moody atmospherics of Wrong Creatures fits right in with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s seven previous records of shoegazing garage rock.

The band got its start when Been was a high-school student in Northern California in the ’90s and met guitarist Peter Hayes. “Peter was two years older than me. Because of the age thing, he pretended he didn’t know me at school, but we’d go back to my house every day and record on my four-track.” They started out with trippy folk influences, trying desperately to emulate Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd before they flushed that out of their system. They eventually found themselves emulating British bands such as My Bloody Valentine, the Verve, and the Stone Roses.

By the time they recorded their debut, B.M.R.C., in 2001, it seemed they were fully formed as a blues-based band. But Been says that wasn’t so. “We didn’t know what we wanted to sound like. The first album was a bunch of experimentation. When it came out, we said we better figure out how to make ourselves sound live like we do on the record.”

Coming out around the same time that stripped-down rock bands such as the Strokes and the White Stripes found their popularity, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club earned radio play and even performed in the experimental, sexually explicit British movie 9 Songs, along with other rock greats such as the Dandy Warhols and Primal Scream. It’s a flick that Been still has never seen. “The director, Michael Winterbottom, had done some awesome shit. He came up to us and said he had an idea for a movie about two characters with no story who watch nine different bands play. He asked if he could film us playing at Brixton Academy, and he promised we wouldn’t notice him filming. I forgot about it. Then people told me the movie is just a lot of sex and then you hear a song, which hasn’t made me want to see it.”

Rather than watching themselves, the bandmates spend their time listening to themselves, because replicating their records onstage has been one of their biggest challenges. “In the studio, you’re isolating instruments. You keep building and building. By the time you’re done, you realize you can’t do it with only three people and their ten fleshy fingers, especially since we shy away from samples.”

On past tours, they’ve tried to remedy the shortage by hiring a fourth member. (Drummer Leah Shapiro is the third.) But for the current tour that winds down at Revolution Live Wednesday, January 24, they were able to master all 12 songs from Wrong Creatures by themselves. While they’re together, might a new batch of songs come easier? Been is hopeful because inspiration is everywhere. “Everything influences everything. Every book, every movie, every person you meet, every relationship goes into it.”

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 24, at Revolution Live, 100 SW Third Ave., Fort Lauderdale; 954-449-1025; Tickets cost $22.50 via

Brightline booking glitch shows trains as ‘sold out’ before debut

January 12th, 2018|Categories: Google News|

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – People trying to reserve a seat on Florida’s new high-speed passenger train system had their hopes derailed Thursday.

Within hours of announcing that its introductory service would begin Saturday, Brightline’s website malfunctioned, preventing prospective passengers from booking trips on the new trains.
Brightline attributed the glitch to “overwhelming excitement.”

“We have temporarily suspended booking rides where train times are displaying as ‘sold out’ while we work through the kinks,” according to a statement on the website.

Brightline is scheduled to begin service between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach this weekend.

People trying to reserve a seat on Florida’s new high-speed passenger train system had their hopes derailed Thursday.

A one-way ticket will cost $10 for its coach class “smart service” and $15 for its business class “select service,” Brightline announced Thursday.

Seniors, active military members and veterans will receive a 10 percent discount, while children 12 and under will receive a 50 percent discount.

The introductory service will have 10 daily roundtrips during the weekdays and nine on the weekends. Trains will depart as early as 6 a.m. and as late as 11 p.m. Brightline said the trip between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach will take about 35 minutes.

Brightline said anyone having trouble purchasing tickets online can use the kiosks at the stations.

Service to Miami is expected in the coming months. Trains will eventually travel between Orlando and Miami, but a date for the Orlando leg of the service hasn’t been determined.

Suspect arrested in fatal shooting near Dillard High School

January 12th, 2018|Categories: Google News|

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A 20-year-old Lauderhill man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of another man earlier this week near Dillard High School.

Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Joy Oglesby said deputies arrested Peter Belony at his Lauderhill home Thursday. He faces one count of premeditated murder.

Oglesby said deputies were called to a shooting Monday at 2721 NW 14th St., just a few blocks from Dillard High School. When deputies arrived, they found Vincent Woodard had been shot.

Woodard, 21, of Lauderhill, was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

A motive for the shooting was not revealed, but Oglesby said the investigation continues.

Health issue delays trial for ‘Skinny Joey,’ reputed mob boss who moved to Boca Raton

January 12th, 2018|Categories: Google News|

A reputed Philadelphia mobster’s racketeering trial has been postponed at least a week because of a medical issue, according to court documents.

Accused mob boss Joseph “Skinny Joey” Merlino — whose trial was slated to start on Jan. 16 in Manhattan Federal Court — remains in South Florida recuperating from a heart ailment.

Merlino went to a Boca Raton hospital emergency room on Tuesday, suffering from “chest pains and coronary spasms and shortness of breath,” one of his lawyers said Thursday.

Merlino, 55, has reportedly survived more than 25 attempted hits and beat three murder raps.

Hospital tests had “abnormal” results and “revealed two ‘significant’ blockages,” said Merlino’s attorney Edwin Jacobs.

The alleged gangster’s doctor said Merlino is on medication and needs to be under “close observation for adjustment of medication,” according to a letter submitted to the court. As a result, the note explains, Merlino can’t fly or travel for at least two weeks.

The trial has been postponed until Jan. 22.

Merlino was supposed to be tried with suspected Genovese capo Eugene “Rooster” Onofrio, who has also got a health related delay.

Last month, the presiding judge separated the cases because of Onofrio’s “need for medical treatment.”

The trial of 75-year-old Onofrio is now “adjourned indefinitely,” court papers say.

Onofrio’s lawyers must check in with the judge by Jan. 26 and every month after that, to provide updates on his health and see if he is fit to stand trial.
